Writing
book recommendations
Focus- Teaching children
how to write critique’s about the stories they read for other students. Teach students the components of what needs
to be included when writing a recommendation. Components like title, author, age group for book, genre , summary, what you
like about the book, what is about, why do recommend this book to other readers and best details of why they should read it
or not. I think this would be a good way for students to interact with each other on what they have read. It gives another
element to participation in reading. Also we will relate this concept to their prior background knowledge with discussing
movies and their critiques.
After
going over examples of recommendations for books and or movies with the class I would write an example from scratch from a
book we have read as a class, with help from the students. After the example I would have children write one on a book they
have read before, preferably this school year so it is still fresh in their mind. Use the components on the board and have
their recommendation as my assessment on how well they understood the concept and the procedure. Having the students write
their critique for other students is a great assessment for student comprehension. Also develops a different style of writing.
