Teaching Social Studies in El

Hieroglyhpic Background 2

I really enjoyed this class-Mrs. Bradshaw showed me how you can treat every student as an equal and as a young adult-to make them feel like they belong.

Some ideas I learned that I will carry with me into my teaching is:
-The three stars, and one wish. I will use this with my students when we are covering text or an activity.
-How to write a thematic unit Social Studies lesson plan, I got a pretty good idea of how to create one.
-I learned how to integrate Social Studies in field trips, readings and in activities. I learned how you can shift Social Studies from just readings to lessons students will be interested in.

04-01-08- Thematic Unit 2 Week Lesson Plans

March 10, 2008

Objective:

Pre-test on how well the students know fifty states in America.

Students will also learn vocabulary

Procedure:

Give out test, have students complete tests. See afterwards how well the students know states and see if the states would be a unit I could do.

I will write out six vocabulary words and explain the vocabulary that will help children for their future projects.

1) Rural 2) Suburb 3) Towns 4) State flags and birds 5) Location 6) Population

March 11, 2008

Objective:

Learn about New Mexico; learn about the lives and contributions of people that helped shape our state.

Procedure:

Have an overhead and begin discussing with a map where New Mexico is at, what does the state flag look like, the state bird, stamp, quarter and the state flower.

We will then go into people in history who have shaped New Mexico such as Kit Carson, Billy the Kid, Mangus Coloradas, Pope, Maria Martinez.

Have the students work on a word search looking for key words we discussed during the day.

Have the students stop and jot in their journals about one or two things they learned today about New Mexico.

March 12, 2008

Objective:

Learn about New Mexico and read literature that relates to New Mexico

Procedure:

I will have a number of picture books that either were written by a person from New Mexico or a story about a person, place or thing in New Mexico. The class will break into small groups; they will then read their books aloud in there groups and then act out a scene or page from the book they just read, and present to the class.  (Acting will be done previous to this unit)

March 13, 2008

Objective:

Students will use the writing process to write an adventure story

Students will use research materials to learn about states other than New Mexico

Procedure:

I will hand out a picture of an animal to each student in the class.

Ask the following question: If you and your animal friend could go on a vacation to any state, where would you go? Make a list on the board.

Tell the students that they are going to choose a state, (every student a different state) and write a story about their adventures with their animal while they were there.

Next, the students will research the state they chose, and decide on three places they would like to visit in their state (cities, museums, landmarks, parks, etc.)

From research, students will write their adventure story using the people, places or things they researched.

Student will write the final draft of their adventure story.

Students will create and share with the class a final poster project. The poster will include a final draft if their adventure story, “pictures” of them and their animal at each of the three places they visited (these will be hang drawn), and captions for each picture.

March 15, 2008

Objective:

Continue from day before students will use research materials to learn about states

Procedure:

Students will continue with their project with the states and present to class

March 18, 2008

Objective:

Create graphs using 10 state populations

Create graphs using climates of the 10 states

Start to create games with states

Procedure:

Pick states that are close to New Mexico and popular states. Colorado, Arizona, Utah, California, Texas, Florida, Nevada, Oklahoma, New York and of course New Mexico.

Look at Social Studies book for the population and climate information and demonstrate with the class on the board of an x and y graphing system with the 10 states populations. Students will then copy the graph. (Will have previous knowledge about graph)

Then write the average climate on the board of each state but in random order.

The students will then create their own x and y graph using the climates.

Students will then have the chance to make with 2-3 people a game using the states. It could do with spelling, where they are located, what there climate is like, what their population is like, what activities or symbols are known at a specific state (example Texas is known for there long horns or there symbol is a star). If students are confused, show them an example using the game cranium but for states.

March 19, 2008

Objective:

Create state game and play

Procedure:

Continue working on state games and play them amongst the group and with other students in the classroom.

This is a two week thematic unit lesson for third grade

March 20, 2008

Objective:

Post Test

Procedure:

Will give out the same test I did before with possibly some extra bonus questions that were not on the pre-test.
