Annotation:

Annotation:

This book is great for a beginner reader. A young bear goes into a hat shop and looks at many different styles, shapes and decides which hat he really likes.

 

 

 

Title: Leonardo & the Terrible Monster

 

Author: Mo Williams

 

Annotation:

This is one of the cutest stories I have ever read! It is very short and simple, great for early readers. It tells of a story about trying to fit in, but friendship becomes the more important message.

 

 

 

Title: Go, Dog, Go!

 

Author: P.D. Eastman

 

Annotation:

This story is definitely for young emergent readers. This book gives good definition of learning directions and colors. I loved this book as a child, and I know new young readers will love it as well.

 

 

 

 

Title: Danny & the Dinosaur

 

Author: Syd Hoff

 

Annotation:

This book is about a young boy's wonderful day as he walks into a museum and meets the Dinosaur. A friendship is made instantly and the two travel around town while helping others. It is a great book for learning new things and expanding your imagination.

 

 

 

 

 Title: The Best Nest

 

Author: P.D. Eastman

 

Annotation:

This is a cute story of a married couple. This married couple are birds, and Mrs. Bird would like to move. So they start to look for new houses; during there journey they go run into many problems. After all of the problems, they finally decide where they would like to live. 

 

 

 

 

Title: The Boy Who Swallowed Snakes

 

Author: Laurence Yep

 

Annotation:

In this Chinese set story, it is about a young boy who comes across a bucket of snakes. The snakes will not leave him alone so he decides to eat the snakes! Surprising results come from eating the snakes, see who fairs out and see who doesn’t! This is a great book to learn use gifts for good and do not get greedy.

 

 

 

 

Title: Flap Your Wings

 

Author: P.D. Eastman

 

Annotation:

This story is about an egg and what is in it. One couple takes care of the egg and the baby even if it is not their baby. The baby ends up where it should and the parents are happy to have helped.

 

 

 

 

Title: How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night?

 

Author: Jane Yolen & Mark Teague

 

Annotation:

This book is a great book for young readers and/ or boys who like dinosaurs! Throughout the book it shows dinosaurs acting as if they were young children not wanting to go to bed at night. Each page has a different dinosaur-with the scientific name, and a different parent for each "dinosaur child". Sets a great example for how you should not act, or should act when going to bed.

 

 

 

Title: The Rain Came Down

 

Author: David Shannon

 

Annotation:

This story is about a day on a street block where it is just raining like mad and puts everyone in a bad mood. Everything goes wrong until the sun comes out and everyone notices how silly they were being. This picture book has really great illustrations!

 

 

 

 

Title: Beetle McGrady Eats Bugs!

 

Author: Megan McDonald

 

Annotation:

Beetle McDonald is a girl on the playground who gets put to the test with a double-dare! She is dared to eat an ant, when she does she spits it out and is embarrassed. When a chef comes to the class one day and brings bugs to class, this does not scare Beetle; she is the first one to try a caterpillar! She can do anything adventurous now.

 

 

 

 

Title: The Baby Shower

Annotation:

This is a cute picture book about Mrs. Bunting Cow who is about to have a baby. So all the animals have to make the long trip and bring a gift for the baby and the baby shower. When they get there not only did Mrs. Bunting Cow have a baby but she had two babies!  

 

 

 

 

 

Title: What Are YOU So Grumpy About?

Annotation:

This is a cute story about all the things in life that makes you grumpy. The twist on this book is though is it makes the grumpy things funny. The pictures are great as well.

Annotation:

This story is about a little girl being in trouble by her mom because her mom said she was to wild. As the little girl is sitting in her chair she thinks of all the animals that are wild and she is not. The girl in the book is soo cute.

 

 

 

 

 

Title: Demi's Opposites

Annotation:

This is a great book for emergent readers. It describes opposites of many basic ideas. The pictures are very good; it also has a picture search while reading the book. Very entertaining.

 

 

 

 

Title: A Porcupine name Fluffy

 

Author: Helen Lester

 

Annotation:

This is a story that I read in my childhood. It is about a porcupine whose name is fluffy and tries to be "fluffy" but it does not work. Until he finds a rhinoceros friend who faces the same challenges he does.

 

 

 

 

Title: Snow Globe Family

 

Author: Jane O'Connor

 

Annotation:

This is a story about a regular family and a snow globe in their house that his a little family inside! Goes through the lives of both the big family and the small family. Both are looking for a blizzard, and while the big family gets one, the baby shakes the globe for the small family to get one too!

 

 

 

 

Title: Froggie Went A-Courtin

 

Author: Iza Trapani

 

Annotation:

This story is about a frog who proposes to a turtle, chipmunk, bird, mouse and they all say no to him. Just when Froggie is feeling very discouraged he meets another Frog and they decide to get married.

 

 

 

 

Title: How the Rattlesnake Got Its Rattle

Annotation:

Snake has to courage at all before he got his rattle. All of the desert animals would play baseball whenever they could but snake was not very good. Everyday wild horses would come and shove all the other animals. One when the horses are around snake swallows some rocks on accident! The result? I'm sure you can guess:-)

 

 

 

 

Title: Sarah's Story

Annotation:

Sarah is suppose to think of a story for class and she just can’t until an ant starts talking to her! She ends up meeting the queen ant, searching for honey, and making the queen ant try a peanut butter and honey sandwich. With all of that, Sarah still does not think she has a story!

 

 

 

Title: The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book

 

Author: Bill Watterson

 

Annotation:

Calvin & Hobbes is such a great comic! The drawings are fantastic; a lot of the situations are real life. Some situations are also imaginative (which is great for young boys). These comics can make anyone laugh, might be a good resource for a boy who does not like to read.

 

 

 

Title: My Grandma lived in GOOLIGULCH

Annotation:

This book is all about animals that mainly live in Australia. This story is told by a young girl and how her grandma lets several wild animals live with her in her house! The grandma is also able to swim with these animals, run and fly.

This is a cute book for young emergent readers. The pictures are very big and go into the very well known story of the nutcracker. I love this story.

 

 

 

Title: The Wedding

Annotation:

This is a humorous story about a wedding and everything that is going wrong! Miss Bundle is suppose to get married but all of the professionals for the wedding are so tired from walking so far! Miss Bundle gives them all a ride into town, and they all find out that Miss Bundle is the bride!

 

 

 

 

Title: Epossumondas

 

Author: Coleen Salley

 

Annotation:

Epossumonda is a sweet animal who just tries to please his mama with what his auntie gives to him to bring home. You have to be careful with what you tell him though, because he will really take it literally! A cute story for anyone to read.

 

 

 

Title: Help!

Annotation:

This is a story about friendship. Mouse heard from fox that his friend snake likes to eat mice! So as mouse is worrying he falls into a deep hole and the person who ends up saving him is snake! Great for a teaching about friendship.

 

 

 

Title: Franklin and the New Teacher

Annotation:

One of the Franklin series and Franklin goes to school for the first day with not Mr. Owl there but Ms. Koala. She is from “down under” and an “aussie”, most of the students do not like her until Franklin takes the initiative.

Annotation:

This is a great book! This book, although for little kids, was a great learning tool for me! It gives parts of different animals and then you find out what the animal uses it for! I loved this book.

 

 

 

 

Title: Ninety Three in my Family

Annotation:

This cute story and good practice of a counting system about a girl and her huge family. The pictures are great and a funny story.

 

 

 

Poetry & Verse Books

 

Title: In Enzo's Splendid Gardens

 

Author: Patricia Polacco

 

Annotation:

This is a picture book but almost all of the verses rhyme and is about a boy in a garden who found a bee. From that the story goes into an adventure of what happens at the party! This is a great book for a shared reading book; students can read along with the refrain. Very entertaining and comical.

 

 

 

 

Title: Amigo

 

Author: Byrd Baylor

 

Annotation:

Francisco, a young boy would like nothing more then a pet dog. His mother and father tell him no because they are just trying to find him and his brother. His mother suggests a prairie dog, and while the family laughs, Francisco thinks it is a good idea and decides he will name the pet Amigo and tame him. Amigo sees the boy one day and decides he will tame the human boy and be his Amigo. It is a very cute and warm story. 

 

 

 

Title: The Wizard

Annotation:

This poem is another of Prelutsky's cute poems. Watch out for the evil wizard because whatever he conjures up for the day could be you!

 

 

 

 

Title: If NOT for the Cat

Annotation:

Prelutsky bases this poetry on the Japanese Haiku. Goes through the book explaining animals and keeps you guessing on what type of animal he is trying to explain.

Annotation:

This book has twelve different poems about different creatures, such as a Snopps, and other creatures that have fantastic names. Very cute poems.

 

 

 

 

Title: The New Kid on the Block

Annotation:

This big book of poems kind of reminds me of Shel Silverstein. The book is set up in sort of the same formality, the pictures and some of the poems. The poems are very thoughtful and very funny. I love the poem, "Homework stinks".

Annotation:

I'm sure everyone has heard these hilarious poems! I have had this book for so long, but every time I open it up, it feels like I have read a poem for the first time. Such a great book for some entertainment.

Annotation:

This is a cute poem about two cows that want to be cowgirls. So they dress up, ride horses and do everything a cowgirl would do! Very cute rhyming and pictures as well.

 

 

Folktale Books

 

Title: Two of Everything

Annotation:

This Chinese Folktale is about an older couple who barley are making it by. With a lucky pot they find themselves a lot better off. It is a very cute question.

 

 

 

 

Title: The Star People-A Lakota Story

Annotation:

Drawn from a Lakota story, this story is about a young girl and boy who get lost and get trapped in a fire. With the help of their grandmother in the stars they return safely home.

 

 

Title: Fairy Trails

Annotation:

This book is a number of stories combined into one whole story. It has several key words that are in Spanish. This book is a great book to make a personal connection; it also could introduce Spanish words to young readers.

There are many stories in this book that are all folktales from India. If you would like to get a cultural feeling of India and learn about their customs, this is a great book for you to read.

The story of a little girl name Bimwili and her trip to the beach. As she is singing with a shell she finds, she meets an ogre name Zimwi. Title: Six Swans- A Folktale

This story is one I have never heard, and I am surprised I have never heard it before. A story of a young lady and her six brothers. An evil witch turns her brothers into swans, the only way she can turn them back is to back shirts that takes six years to make! During that time she is not aloud to talk, laugh or cry. Find out what happens to the young lady and her six brothers.

 

 

 

 

Title: The Gifts of Wali Dad

Annotation:

Based on an India & Pakistan tale, lives an old humble man who finds himself a pot of gold. The old man would rather give then to receive, but his plan goes the exact opposite of what he hoped for! It seems every person would want what this old man receives, but he does not. This story shows a great lesson of be thankful for what you have.

 

 

 

 

Title: A Crocodile's Tale

Annotation:

Based on a Philippine Folk story, it is about a boy who saves a crocodile's life, when the crocodile does not return the favor he looks to other things to ask what they think about the situation. Barely surviving he learns to be grateful for what he has.

Annotation:

Based on an Appalachian story, the story is about a man name Willie who thinks he is the strongest man there is. Willie and Delilah end up fighting each other to see who is the strongest. See who ends up stronger and what happens to Willie at the contest!

 

 

Title: The Problem with Chickens

This is a cute story about an original Icelandic village where the ladies need eggs, so they buy some chickens. Soon however the chickens start acting like all of the women! So the women trick them into laying eggs again.

This story is about a young girl name Lucy Rose who is in the third grade. Her parents just got a divorce and so Lucy moves with her mom to Washing D.C. where her Madam and Pop live as well. The story has a set-up as a diary, and throughout the diary we see Lucy that has a hard time in school, make friends, and have to put up with Melon boy. She's an original thinker who has a lot on her mind to say.

 

 

 

Title: Down the Road

Annotation:

Mama and Papa would like to eat eggs for breakfast, but they don't have any, so Hattie offers to go get the eggs at the store. She buys the eggs and while coming home she finds an apple tree and decides they are papa's and mama's favorite so she would just get three. When out falls all of her eggs and not one is good. So Hattie climbs into the tree not wanting to go home when soon her mom and dad come find her and sit up in the tree with her, eating apples. What do they eat for breakfast then? This is a cute story that I’m sure every child fears sometime or another- the first day of school and losing your first tooth. This story is about a girl on her first day and a bully on bus tells her, her new teacher is an alien who takes students’ teeth!

 

 

 

Title: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Annotation:

This is an original from my prime childhood years. I loved this book! This book is about a boy-Alexander and everything bad happens to him within one day. Always reminded me my day was never as bad as Alexander’s.

 

 

 

Historical Fiction Books

 

Title: Old Yeller

 

Author: Fred Gibson

 

Annotation:

This book is a very touching and heart-warming story. Set in the 1860's, it is centered on a family and a dog. Through the dog who they name "old yella" his spirit and help makes this family so much closer and makes Travis who was a boy, become the man that he needs to be to live in the environment he does live in. 

 

 

 

Title: Oliver Twist

 

Author: Charles Dickens

 

Annotation:

A tragic but inspirational story about who boy who despite of all the hardships he had to endure. He managed to fight for what he believed in under everything he had to overcome. This is a great story for anyone who feels they are at rock bottom of their life, and just need a helping hang or who thing to go right. It is a great story for anyone who wants to be inspired.

 

 

 

 

Title: Follow the Drinking Gourd

 

Author: Jeanette Winter

 

Annotation:

Based on the early days of slavery in America. This story is about an old white man who goes through the cotton fields and sings a song over and over again about how to get to freedom. A family of five needs to get out and so with their song they follow the stars and the hills, meet the old man, and with his help they cross over into Canada.

 

 

 

Title: Mackinac Bridge

Annotation:

This is a cute story of when the Mackinac Bridge (in Michigan) was going up and the process of it. Also goes into the story of a young boy's dad who was the captain of a ferry boat the Aurora and how he was going to be shut down because of the bridge.

Annotation:

This book talks about all the different ways trains work around the world. This is also an informational book as well. Give directions; north, south, etc. and has great pictures.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Autobiography/ Biography Books

 

Title: Hilde and Eli

 

Author: David Adler

 

Annotation;

This story is based on the Holocaust in Germany. This story is about two children who are victims of the Holocaust and who are both killed in gas chambers. Hilde is living in Germany and Eli is living in Czechoslovakia. These are their stories.

 

 

 

Title: The Boyhood Diary of Theodore Roosevelt

 

Author: Edited by: Shelley Swanson Sateren

 

Annotation:

This Diary was written by Roosevelt within two years of his child years. His family was very wealthy so he wrote when he was traveling in Africa and in Europe. The book also touches on Roosevelt’s hard life when he was physically weak as a child. Also touches on being the 26th president and accomplishes he made during this time.

 

 

 

 

Title: Ellen Ochoa- Pioneering Astronaut

 

Author: Lisa Johnston

 

Annotation:

Ellen was the first Hispanic women to become an astronaut. In 1993 she was able to fly the Discovery and accomplish her dream. She did not know what she wanted to do till an older age. When she was in college she changed her degree five times until she picked electrical engineering, she became a pilot, and she has been in space for nearly 1,000 hours and has become a role model.

 

 

 

 

Title: The Young Person's Guide to Shakespeare

Annotation:

This book goes into Shakespeare life, what they know about his personal life. Then it goes into the plays that he wrote and where they fit in certain genres. It also talks about the Globe he performed in and what acting was life in Shakespeare's time. This gives a great introduction for Shakespeare.

 

 

 

 

Title: Joe Louis- America's Fighter

Annotation:

This is an inspirational story about a young man who decided through his hard life living as a poor, African American to become a boxer. He becomes a great boxer and becomes the world's greatest heavy weight champion. He leads people through the hard times of the Great Depression and WWII.

 

 

 

 

Title: Mae Jemison

 

Author: Robert Kraske

 

Annotation:

Mae Jemison is the first African American women to become an astronaut. Born was born in Chicago and even as a little girl she knew she wanted to become an astronaut. She was one of the youngest students at Stanford, she became a scientist, she studied in biomedical engineering, she traveled to Africa to help others, she became a doctor and in 1992 she went into space on the Endeavour.

Annotation:

The story of the Hobbit is about a hobbit name Mr. Baggins and his journey with eleven other dwarfs and a wizard. Through the journey Bilbo finds a magical object and with that many ups and downs happens to this group. This is a great magical story that can enhance anyone’s imagination.

 

 

 

 

Title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

 

Author: J.K. Rowling

 

Annotation:

If you are a Harry Potter you will absolutely love this last book of one of the biggest series. Last year at Hogwarts, who will stay? Who will leave early? Who will be killed fighting for what they believe in? And who will win is the biggest question. This is a very suspenseful, never putting down the book.

 

 

 

 

Title: Arrow to the Sun -a Pueblo Indian Tale

 

Author: Gerald McDermott

 

Annotation:

This story is about a boy whose mother and father were the sun. When he is old enough he shoots up through an arrow to the sun and proves to his father that he is his sun. When he does the sun gives him powers and the son goes back to his people to give the suns energy. The pictures are awesome.

 

 

 

 

Title: Raven- A trickster tale from the Pacific Northwest

 

Author: Gerald McDermott

 

Annotation:

This story is about a Raven who found that the sky was always gray and there was never any light. So Raven decides to find the sun, he is reincarnated into the Sun's grandson and as a baby finds the sun in a box! The Raven then turns back into Raven and puts the sun high in the sky for light to shine on the people.
