Genre & Literary Elements

Genre- Anime & Manga

Literary Element- Structure & Unity

When I was assigned this genre I had NO IDEA what it was! I have never read this genre, so this was a first. I am very glad I had a chance to do this topic however; I was able to learn ALOT. I was also introduced to a genre that seems to be growing around the world.

First I should break up Anime & Manga-
Anime is a Japanese word that means animation. Many genres are tied into this genre. Romance, comedy, horror, science fiction & etc. Manga is a type of genre that fits into Anime. Anime in the past was just for younger boys in Japan. Now however, it has spread and is all over the world ranging from young children to older adults, girls are also taking a liking to this genre. There are also books that teach you to draw the Anime way. Anime usually has distinctive characters and backgrounds. Every year there is an Anime Expo's take place around the world where thousands gather. Anime is more of a series and is now intended for older audiences.

Manga is probably one of the most popular sub genres that fits into Anime. Manga is also a Japanese word that means comics. They have drawings and computer graphics to bring out this genre. These books are usually printed in black and white and read from right to left. These art forms usually have complex story lines and big eyed, big hair characters. Its current form was done shortly after WWII. Manga was the fastest growing segment of books in the United States in 2005.

There is also a term that ties in with Japanese culture as well as this genre and it is Honorifics. Honorifics can be expressions of respect or endearment. Honorifics also gives insight into the nature of the relationship between the characters. Many translations from Japanese to Japan leave out these Honorifics and therefore distort the feel of the original work.
-san- Mr. Mrs., atc.
-sama- one level higher than san
-dono- means lord
-kun- when addressing someone younger or lower class

Chapters are listed as Chapitre or listed as Program 1, Program 2, etc. Also found each Chapter as Duel. At the beginning of the book they sometimes have a picture of the main characters in the story and what their characteristics are. At the end of the book they also have pictures and preview of upcoming books.

Some books/movies of the Anime & Manga genre are Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon Venus Wars, Love Hina, City Hunter and Neon Genesis Evangelion. There are many many more not listed! There are many books that are not translated into English. Anime & Manga also come through magazines, computers, cards, film and video games.

Here are some of the books that I looked into:
"Short Program 2" By: Mitsuru Adachi
"Yu-Gi-Oh!" By: Kazuki Takahashi
"Reservoir Chronicle Tsubasa" By: William Flanagan

Literary Elements

For my literary Elements I had Structure & Unity. Although these are separate they do fit quite well with each other.

Unity is the sense that all the elements in a piece of writing fit together to create a harmonious effect. To make sure that all your words are right for a sentence, or your sentences all form one idea for the paragraph. Organizing everything to make sure it makes a whole. It could be unified for the form, a theme, a symbol and/or an intent.
Structure is the frame of the story. This is how a novel is written.  Novels do not have to be broken into chapters or even paragraphs.  But there are many, subtler, uses of structure.  Structure can be how an author breaks a book into chapters. Structure includes where action happens and how much of the action is explained by the narrator. Structure can also be the authors style of writing throughout a book. Structure in elementary includes the introduction, followed by three paragraphs and then a conclusion.

Structure & Unity make what a good story is. They create a story that is easy to comprehend and whatever the message is of the story, or what the author is trying to say, can be accomplished. Structure and Unity allows emotion to come out and entertain the audience.
